DraftKings Launches New Live Sports App: DK Live

This effort has gotten more serious with the recent launch of a new mobile app – DK Live – a product separate from its platform and its DFS application.

DK Live at a glance

DK Live is billed as the digital and fantastic version of “NFL RedZone” by DraftKings. CEO of DraftKings Jason robin unveiled DK Live at TechCrunch Disruption in San Francisco today.

“Our team built DK Live with the fantastic player in mind, creating an experience that’s right for every fan and connecting them to the content that matters most to them,” Robins said in a press release. “DK Live is our latest way to give sports fans the best technology and experience by eliminating frantic screen hopping between different apps and websites on game day. “

Currently, the new offering is available for iOS in the App Store, with plans to eventually launch a Android version. The app is powered largely by data provided by STATS LLC, which DraftKings also uses for its core app.

The app is not necessarily revolutionary in the idea that it provides sports information to fans, although the app outperforms other fantasy-based apps in its ability to provide information based on what a DFS player wants to see.

“The goal for us is really to have the experience of sweating your lineups and your sports media consumption beyond DraftKings,” Corey gottlieb, vice president of content at DraftKings, told Legal Sports Report in a product demo.

What’s in the app?

  • Strong points: A filterable section allows users to see every red zone play, touchdown, turnover and gain over 20 yards for live games.
  • Notes: Users can see all game scores including a game’s scoreboards to follow a game feed for individual games.
  • News: The news section includes the latest player news and injury updates from Twitter, RotoWire and FantasyLabs, among other news sources. DK Live also builds on a relationship with Inside Injuries, which analyzes the impact of injuries.

The coolest thing about DK Live: DraftKings users can customize the app based on their fantastic lineup for that week. Users who also have the DraftKings app can filter information so that they only receive information relevant to their fantastic queues.

“This is the real differentiator for us, for a DraftKings user,” said Gottlieb. “It all has to do with the players you made decisions about when you were drafting. “

Will people adopt DK live?

DK Live intends to be a one-stop-shop for everyday fantasy football players, allowing them to easily consume information for any players and teams they want, fantasy sports related or not.

“We think it’s a perfect second screen for people who watch games live and for people who are trying to follow their players,” said Gottlieb.

However, the application is separate from the traditional DraftKings application, where players can assemble queues, enter contests, and track their performance against other DFS players in those contests.

Yet DFS users often still use two or more apps or websites to track sports – the app (s) for their DFS competitions and a sports app / website. Gottlieb argues that no product on the market is aimed so much at the DFS user, with the fantastic level of customization available on DK Live. This gives it a head start as a potential sports source, at least for DFS players.

Can DK Live make a dent in a space already filled with a myriad of apps providing real-time sports information? If DraftKings and other users find it different and useful enough, that potential exists.

Yahoo Sports app update affects MLB live streams

Yahoo Sports is emphasizing Major League Baseball (MLB) live streams on its rebuilt mobile app with a host of new features.

As part of its latest update, the completely redesigned app now features a personalized live streaming guide that helps you find and connect to services that stream MLB games. Additionally, Yahoo Sports will allow you to watch selected broadcasts of the game of the day during the current MLB season live on your iOS or Android device.

Now when you open the app, you will see a “Watch” button next to the games with streaming options on the “Schedule” page. Select the game you want to watch and you’ll be taken to its details page, where you’ll find a “Watch Now” button that tells you where it’s streaming. Yahoo says the app manages complex rights and blackout restrictions to show you only the live streaming options available to you. Also, for mobile streaming fans, if a game is labeled “Live on Yahoo”, that means you can watch it directly on the game’s details page. It’s not just baseball fans who benefit from live action, Yahoo also currently broadcasts four NHL games per week, which can be viewed on the app.

Apart from visual content, Yahoo Sports offers news and updates from all major sports leagues. Sports fans can personalize their app experience by selecting their favorite teams and can receive notifications and updates. The app also features exclusive content from popular Yahoo Sports columnists such as Adrian Wojnarowski, Dan Wetzel and Pat Forde.

“We’re thrilled to say that the days of scouring the internet to find where your live sports are streamed are a thing of the past,” Parker Emmott, director of product management at Yahoo, says in a Tumblr post. “Starting today with MLB, our completely redesigned Yahoo Sports app now features a guide to finding and streaming live baseball games.”

Despite a major transition following its recent acquisition by Verizon, Yahoo remains committed to refreshing its products in an effort to keep pace with its rivals. Like other web giants such as Twitter and Facebook, Yahoo stepped up its live streaming game this year – first acquiring the live streaming rights to 180 MLB games, then launching a free Hulu streaming service. in the form of Yahoo View.

JetBet today announces the launch of its social sports technology in partnership with men’s lifestyle brand Maxim, which is also unveiling its Maxim Sports Live website.

Real-time technology allows sports fans to predict sporting events as they happen in a “second screen” experience. The first website (with Facebook and pending mobile apps) targets NFL football fans, which is a big market as 16.2 million viewers watch every NFL game.

Las Vegas-based JetBet, founded by video game pioneer Louis Castle, has created a way for sports fans to test their knowledge – but not bet real money in exchange for real money winnings – on every game in a sporting event in real time.

Maxim’s first product is a free website, where players can pay real money to participate in tournaments, but cannot cash out any winnings. Instead, they can earn points that give them bragging rights. Players get free virtual currency for making predictions, but if they run out or want to play in bigger tournaments, they can buy more with real money.

“We’re focused on the competitive fun of predicting sports game by game,” Castle said in an email.

Maxim Sports Live will allow sports fans to make predictions, demonstrate their knowledge and share their passion for their teams in real time during live sports events via the app on mobile devices. You can predict just about anything that you think will happen next in a game. Maxim will present Maxim Sports Live as an intuitive experience for players of all levels, and it will include a chat function to discuss games and banter with rivals.

“Maxim has built the leading men’s lifestyle brand by understanding the pulse of his audience,” Castle, CEO and co-founder of JetBet, said in a statement. “We are very pleased to be their partner in bringing real-time social sports to tens of millions of fans around the world.”

Castle, who has three decades of experience in video games and is known as the co-founder of Westwood Studios (which was acquired by Electronic Arts) also has experience in real-money gambling. He was a board member of tabletop game maker Shuffle Master (SHFL Entertainment). After that, he served as its chief strategy officer before its $1.3 billion sale in 2014 to slots giant Bally Technologies.

He was inspired to create JetBet after seeing a demo of Metric Gaming’s live data analytics, which focuses on real-money gambling. He saw the opportunity to create a free game based on technology. So he got a license for sports analytics from Metric and approached Bellwether to get a license for the social casino platform. Then he hired staff to create a custom app that could make watching live sports more exciting with a free gaming experience that didn’t involve real-money gambling.

Castle said in an email that the company is not an “everyday fantasy sports” startup, where rivals allow players to build sports teams and then bet on their performance on the playing field. There is controversy over whether these apps are legal skill-based games or constitute real-money gambling, as claimed by the New York State Attorney General.

JetBet and Maxim are play-by-play actions, and they are not focused on replicating everyday fantasy sports betting. Instead, we focus on free play for the bragging rights experience. Tournaments offer nothing but bragging rights, and if players ever receive actual prizes, they would be for playing, not as a prize for a particular successful prediction, Castle said. He said he considers JetBet Predictions to be a skill-based game, not a chance-based betting experience.

JetBet’s technology is based on Metric Gaming, which combines human and computer analysis to set the odds for each prediction. Live event data feeds into Metric Gaming analytics. Bellwether’s socially scalable casino platform delivers game prediction options to mobile devices of all kinds using HTML5, the lingua franca of the web. The broadcast event delay loop allows JetBet to follow the action from second to second and is often even a few seconds ahead of the broadcast. The company was founded in 2014 and has 11 employees. Competing sites include other daily fantasy sports sites where players hang out at sporting events.

Live streaming, real-time scores and merchandising

Fancred started as a social network for sports fans, a place where people could share photos of games and talk about the mess of rival teams. But, like Facebook and Twitter when they got big, the 3-year-old platform has bigger ambitions. He wants to be the next global sports media company. That plan starts rolling into place on Wednesday, when Fancred adds live video and real-time game scores to its mobile apps and website, and that’s just the beginning.

Fancred might just be the first sports app with a Periscope-like live-streaming feature. Anyone can stream on the app, although there is a 5 minute limit. This cap serves two purposes: it gives the person time to broadcast to call out the worst play in the game, provide a window into the action on the field, or show a brief scene from the tailgating party. And if you’re a viewer watching the stream, you know how long you have to wait to catch the ending. It’s not an opportunity for people to stream entire games to their subscribers, which is a problem Periscope has faced.

“Fans always want to rant, fans want to shout their opinions and do the Monday morning quarterback,” Fancred CEO Kash Razzaghi said. “We believe it will be a place where sports personalities are born.”

While anyone can live stream, Fancred realizes that sports fans want to see expert video commentary. It partners with dozens of media companies and sports teams to create what are essentially mini TV shows that stream live within the app. Mashable, the boston globeSportswriters from and Mississippi State University teams are all on board with Fancred live streams, with more to come.

Fans won’t be able to comment on shows, like they can on other apps. Instead, Fancred will offer upvote and downvote options to keep the community civil.

The other new feature, live scores, is something the sports app has never offered before. Fancred launches real-time game information with NFL scores before rolling out stats for all major leagues across all sports.

“We’re going to be giving out super fast, up-to-the-minute personalized scores for fans who want to follow their teams,” Razzaghi said. “We want Fancred to be useful to you even if you’re not super active on social media.”

The new Fancred is organized into three feeds: your main activity feed from people you follow on the platform, such as teams, journalists or other fans; a stream for live streams currently on air; and a stream for real-time scores. The platform will soon add tabs for commerce, so fans can buy tickets or in-app merchandising, and a personalized news feed with original editorial content created exclusively for Fancred.

It’s a bold move to try and compete in a space where Facebook and Twitter dominate, but Fancred is betting big on its community of passionate sports fans to spread the word. For people who don’t want to deal with the social aspect of a social network, Fancred’s new features are great. Being able to open a separate sports app to catch a live broadcast during a commercial break or check the score at work is a drama-free way to stay connected while gaming without getting into a family Facebook war.
