JOHOR wants more prestigious local and international sporting events to be held in the state to attract crowds.
Chairman of the national committee for youth, sports, entrepreneur development, cooperatives and human resources, Mohd Hairi Mad Shah, noted that two international sporting events are soon to take place.
The Johor International Petanque Double Championship Men’s and Women’s 2022 will be held on August 27-28 while the Spartan Stadion Malaysia 2022 is scheduled to take place on September 24.
“At a recent meeting of the working committee, I asked the organizers of the two events to focus on promotion to attract more participants, especially from abroad,” he said.
Johor had hosted two international sporting events so far this year, namely Ltape Malaysia in June and Iron Man 70.3 Desaru Coast last month.
Mohd Hairi also said that the 2022 International Islamic and Halal Festival of Johor (Fijo) would return after three years.
He added that the four-day event will be held from September 29 at Persada Johor International Convention Center in Johor Baru.
“Fijo 2022 will strengthen Johor’s position as a global player in the halal hub industry,” he said, adding that when it debuted in 2019, sales of RM7mil were recorded.
This year the state is setting a target of over RM20mil in sales and 150,000 visitors.
“Fijo 2022 will provide 300 lots for local and international entrepreneurs to display their halal products.
“International participants will come from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, the UK as well as several countries in the Middle East,” he said.
There will be eight exhibitor groups such as information technology and telecommunications, government agencies, food technology, finance and e-commerce, industry and machinery, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and fashion as well as tourism and education.
Mohd Hairi urged local entrepreneurs to take advantage of the growing halal market to meet global demand.
“More than US$1.2 trillion (RM5.34 trillion) was spent on buying halal products in 2018 and it is expected to increase to US$1.9 trillion (RM8.45 trillion) this year “, did he declare.
