CEBU CITY, Philippines — Prior to stepping down as chairman of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB), Abraham “Baham” Mitra and the agency’s boxing and other contact sports division launched the “GAB Combat Sports Website,” the Wednesday, June 29, 2022.
The website was created primarily to provide the Philippine combat sports scene with a stand-alone information system for records of combat sports athletes, promoters, coaches, matchmakers and other stakeholders.
The website is modeled after the very popular and reliable Boxrec.com which contains all the important information for boxers around the world.
However, the GAB website is only for Filipino combat sports and Filipino combat athletes.
Besides boxing, the website serves as a repository of information on mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, and kickboxing.
It contains not only combat athletes’ win and loss records, but also their personal information, current contract, manager, and other essential publicly available information.
“This is based on Boxrec.com, but it’s exclusively for Filipino combat sports athletes, not just in boxing, but all professional combat sports from MMA, Muay Thai, to kickboxing. That’s what makes this website unique,” Mitra said in a Zoom presser Wednesday afternoon.
“The purpose of this website is to be used not only by matchmakers and managers, but also by combat athletes themselves, even overseas promoters.”
The website is co-managed by GAB’s boxing and other contact sports division and technology provider, Integratr Corporation.
“Information is power. Information is sometimes expensive, but GAB is willing to let that go in the spirit of transparency and participation,” Mitra added.
During the presser, Mitra also announced that they are open to suggestions and even criticism from everyone involved in combat sports if only to improve the site even further.
For his part, GAB Commissioner Eduard Trinidad said the website also provides information on a combat sports athlete’s current license and management contract.
At the same time, it also provides information about active permits and permission letters on the promotional side.
“You have your source of event information, stakeholders are involved, but you have the database that has information from GAB as it relates to contact sports. We’ll just run through it through the website. and the system Madali na natin ma checheck ang mga licenses, permits, contracts and authorization letter,” Trinidad said.
“I hope we will use this information and records management system to benefit, improve and strengthen combat sports in the Philippines.”
Currently, GAB and its technology provider are fine-tuning the website pages.
